Gold Tor, easy winner of the Trentham Hurdles on Saturday, and now an early favourite for the Grand National Hurdles next month, would have been a big disappointment to his connections if he had failed to show some aptitude for jumping.

An eight-year-old by Golden Abbey from a mare by Ruthless, sire of many

hardy winter performers. Gold Tor is a third generation descendant of a sister to Clarion Call, whose deeds over the big fences thrilled thousands at Riccarton in the 19305. Gold Tor’s success on Saturday was his fifth consecutive win as a' hurdler. He: started the sequence at The Rangitikei meeting last, October, won at Awapuni in i April, then won twice at ■Trentham in May. Gold Tor is trained for Mrsi M. J. and Mr T. McK. Duncan by M. B. Andrews.' who was once one of New. Zealand’s top jumping riders, and has since had: some notable successes as a trainer of jumpers. Andrews prepared Sabaean Summer, also owned by the Duncan family, to win the Grand National Hurdles in 1970.
