Chch boat’s marathon
(N.Z. Press DUNEDIN. A Christchurch boat, Outlaw, driven by J. Butterfield, and crewed by P. Phillips, won the 1974 Southern Lakes marathon on Lake Wakatipu on Saturday. The second and third boats across the line in the 52jmile event were Spooky Mogul, driven by B. Ford, of Timaru. and Skope, driven by R. Stewart. Of the 135 boats in the various classes, 26 came from Canterbury and three from the North Island, the remainder being from Otago or Southland. Outlaw, an 18-foot Ryan craft powered by a 500 h.p. 454 cu. in. Chevrolet V 8 engine, took the lead in the third lap of the speed section of the marathon after trailing behind Hi-Jack, driven by J. Gallagher, of Christchurch, and Topaz, from Auckland, driven by A. Mackay. Both the latter boats broke down.
Outlaw won the speed section with an average speed of 66 m.p.h. Placings in other sections in the race were:— Section C.—Jim Beam (M. Kepple), 1; S L (N. Sutherland). 2. Section D.—Fl-Glass Volvo (J. Stirling). 1; Mr Fi-Glass 111 (F. Simpson), 2. Section E.—Witchcraft (D. Stent). 1; Li’l Twister (A. Renfree), 2. Section F.—Fi Glass Fireball (A. Nesbitt), 1; Puppet (S. Galligan), 2. Section CC.—Geronimo (A. Menyres). 1; Larrikin (G. Anderson), 2. Section DC.—The Streaker (E. Atkinson), 1; Penta Cresta (B. Pearse), 2. Section EC. —Fi Glass Scamp, ■t. Section FC.—Goldie (R. Jones), 1; Topas (E. Ashley), 2.
