Building opposed
The proposed 15-storey ; parking building on Gough, i Gough, and Hamer’s former' site in Cashel Street has been criticised by the Environmental Vanguard Organisation in a letter to the Christchurch City Council, i The chairman of the or-; ganisation (Dr Helen Her-, vey) says that such a build-; ing will encourage the use; lof private cars instead of promoting the use of public transport, with a consequently greater use of petrol and congestion of nearby streets. The building at 150 ft high, will be probably the highest in Christchurch, she says.; “It will do nothing to enhance the city’s skyline, and being on the north side of the street it will block the sun all day.’’ Dr Hervey says that the erection of vast car parks in the inner city conflicts with the concept of building parking buildings in the outer belts, and from which there would be a frequent minibus service into the city. It was announced some time ago that the City Council was investigating this system, and it is hoped that some further announcement will be made soon, Dr Hervey says.
