Protest stock-cut remit rejected

(From Our Own Reporter) ROTORUA. The Dominion'conference of Federated Farmers has rejected a proposal from its Nelson province that the possibility of lowering stock numbers should be examined until the Government formulated a more definite policy on farming and induced some stability in the economy.

Mr W. L. Eggers (Nelson) said that the Government did not appear to be concerned about the lessening profitability of farming. There was a danger that it would support'farmers just enough to keep them at a peasant level.

In the past farmers had responded to calls for increased production to find that the greatest benefits went to other sections of the community. Direct action was favoured by other sections of the community to get their goals, said Mr Eggers. Some reduction in stock numbers would reduce costs and production and would Gpvemment really take notice.

Mr R. J. Hulse (RotoruaTaupo) urged the conference to dispose of this proposal speedily because there was no place for negative thinking.

It was defeated by a fair majority of the delegates.
