HOUSEWIVES TO FORM PICKET
Amid talk of their own “strike,” Christchurch housewives have decided to picket the stop-work meeting of Christchurch drivers at the Addington Show Grounds this morning. Irate telephone calls to a Christchurch radio station about the 24-hour stoppage yesterday set in train a series of events which resulted in almost 200 housewives agreeing to picket the meeting. The radio station took the telephone numbers of two of the callers —- and these two have been act*
ing as organisers of the picket, which they hope to form outside the main gates of the show grounds at 8.45 a.m. About 3000 drivers are expected to attend the meeting, which will decide whether to extend their 24-hour stoppage. Similar meetings will be held in Ashburton and Timaru later in the day. With the exception of ambulance and hospitalvehicle drivers, any union members found driving during the stop-work will be severely dealt with, according to the union president (Mr L. M. Bums).
