Well-known former sportswoman dies
Mrs Margaret Rattray, who i died recently in Christchurch, i was well known in sporting circles.
Mrs Rattray was a member of the Todd family, which lived for many years at Coutts Island. After her niarriage, she worked with her husband in the catering firm of P. Burke and Company. From 1931 until 1950, Mr and Mrs Rattray were the proprietors of the Bush Inn. During World War 11, she did patriotic work including
organising meals for servicemen on leave and fundraising for the Red Cross. Mrs Rattray crocheted the
altar cloth at St Augustine’s Church, Clarkville. After the death of her husband in 1950, she became actively. involved in her sporting interests. She was a member of the Russley Ladies’ Golf Club and was on and women’s captain for a short time. She Won the bronze championship in 1945 and gave a trophy — the Rattray Salvers — to the club. Mrs Rattray was a foundation member of the Fendalton Park Croquet Club and also held the office of president. She was patroness of the Bumside Women’s Bowling Club at the time of her death and was granted life membership of both the bowling and croquet clubs. She is survived by two daughters and two sons.
