(From Our Own Reporter) ROTORUA, July 3. A strong defence of the Government’s support for fanners was made at the Dominion conference of Federated Farmers this afternoon by the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk).

‘Tor any Government to adopt a couldn’t-care-less attitude towards the farmer would be a form of economic suicide for New Zealand,” he said. The additional cost of the fertiliser subsidy announced this week by the Government would represent about $26 from every taxpayer in the country.

On top of giving farmers subsidies on fertiliser and lime expected to cost s46m this year, Mr Kirk said, to help farmers as well as other industries the Government was also holding rail freight and bulk electricity costs.

This year, estimates for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries were up to $109.5m.
