MAGISTRATE’S COURT Woman imprisoned for six months

A term of six months imprisonment was imposed on Moira Sandra Anderson, aged 21, a hospital worker (Mr T. M. Abbott), when she appeared for sentence in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on three charges of false pretence, and charges of obtaining credit by fraud and burglary. She had previously pleaded guilty.

The charges of false pretence related to obtaining of airline tickets, a watch, and money amounting to $88.46. The offence of obtaining credit by fraud related to the obtaining of accommodation worth $24 at a private hotel.

The burglary charge arose from her acting as look-out when another person broke into the premises of Bennetts Butchery, in Worcester Street.

The offences were committed between May 6 and May 13. Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., said that the defendant had a long list of previous offences, and had been released on probation on a number of occasions. NARCOTICS CHARGES

A youth who had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of having a narcotic in his possession on May 30 was fined a total of $2OO and placed on probation for one year when he appeared for sentence. He is Stephen Thomas Flaus, aged 18, a lineman (Mr G. R. Lascelles).

As a special condition of probation he was ordered to live and work where directed by the probation officer. Flaus had previously pleaded guilty to the charges of having 2.5 grams of cannabis and two tablets of lysergide in his possession when the police searched his motel room in Estuary Road.

The Magistrate said he took into account the small quantity of the narcotics involved, the defendant’s age, and his previous good record. OFFENCE WITH GIRL

Brian Walter Thomas, aged 22, a labourer 'Mr A. S. Menzies), was convicted and fined $lOO when he pleaded guilty to a charge of having unlawful sexual intercourse in March with a girl aged 15. When Thomas appeared for sentence later in the day on a charge of obtaining liquor worth $22 by a false pretence, he was fined $5O, placed on probation for one year, and ordered to pay full compensation. He had previously pleaded guilty and been convicted. ROBBERY CHARGE Two men jointly charged with robbing Edward Ross Alexander of narcotics worth $36.82 while armed with a .22 semi-automatic rifle on May 23 were remanded to July 17 for the taking of de positions. They are Ron-Id Phillip Clarke, aged 22. a factory hand (Mr C. A. McVeigh), and Malcolm Mervyn Page, aged 20. a process worker (Mr G. S. Brockett). Page was remanded in custody, and Clarke was allowed bail. REMAND Arthur Currie, aged 33 (Mr M. P. Boyce), was remanded on bail to July 10 when he appeared on, charges of being in charge of a; .303 calibre rifle on July 2 while ‘ under the influence of drink or' a drug, and burgling a house In Latimer Square on the same date. No plea was entered. (Before Mr H. J. Evans, S.M.) ’ CAUSED INJURY

Lawrence Patrick Blackburn, aged 36, a clerk (Mr R. J. Murfitt). was fined $lOO, and disqualified from driving for four months, when he appeared on a charge of careless driving causing injury to Dorothy Milne.

The defendant pleaded not guilty. Detective Sergeant T. O. Tozer said the charge arose from an accident outside the Aranui Hotel on the evening of February 28. The complainant gave evidence that she suffered cuts to the legs and elbow requiring 103 stitches, and glass from her spectacles had to be removed from her eyes. She was the driver of the other car involved in the accident. BLOOD-ALCOHOL William Murray Heath, aged 31. a fisherman (Mr M. J. Glue), was convicted on his plea of guilty to a charge of driving with an excessive blood-alcohol concentration (168 mg on April 7. He was fined $lOO, disqualified for nine months, and ordered to pay $l5 medical expenses. (Before Messrs J. L. Ives and E. J. Bradshaw, Justices of the Peace) TWO ASSAULTS Euan Dennis, aged 18, unemployed (Mr K. N. Hampton), was committed to the Supreme Court for trial after the taking of depositions on charges of assaulting Stephen Frank Ripley and Peter Douglas Willetts with intent to facilitate his flight. Mr Ripley said in evidence that he was about to drive from the Addington Raceway carpark

: about 9.15 p.m. on April 25 when the defendant appeared at the car door and accused him of running him over. Mr Ripley opened his door and that was the last he remembered.

Mr Willetfs said that lie and his wife were .getting into a car in front of Mr Ripley’s car when he saw the defendant kick Mr Ripley in the face. The defendant then abused Mrs Willetts after she made some comment.

Mr. Willetts became upset, threw his racebook and car keys towards the defendant, and took off his coat. The defendant tan off and when Mr Willetts caught him Dennis put his thumb in the witness’s eyes and managed io escape. At a race meeting in May Mr Willetts saw the defendant and pointed him out to the police. Senior-Sergeant I. M. Gardiner said that when he arrived at the scene of the alleged assault he found Mr Ripley had a swollen eye, three broken teeth, a bruised nose, and had cuts to the cheeks.

ATTEMPTED RAPE A man was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of attempted rape of a seven-year-old girl.

Herewini Walpouri, aged 21, a truck driver (Mr L. M. O’Reilly), pleaded guilty to the charge after the taking of depositions. He was granted bail.
