A Christchurch nurse. Miss Phillipa Chisholm (above, left) is extending her nursing experience in the floating hospital on hoard the Chandris liner, Australis.
Miss Chisholm joined the ship at Southampton in February and hopes to remain on board for one more round trip before
continuing her travels through Britain and Europe, says a news release from the shipping line. She enjoys working on the ship but finds the language barrier quite a
problem. “Both Greek doctors speak only a little English and the nurses have to try to explain to the doctors
what symptoms a patient has. Then we must try to understand the nursing instructions,” she said. “It gets very confusing at times.”
Nursing on board ship is hard work. The four nurses work seven days a week with one week of night duty and two weeks of day duty.
“The work is hard, but life on the ship is so much fun that you bear with it,” Phillipa Chisholm said.
Another nurse on board the ship, Sue Gardiner (at right in the photograph) is also a New Zealander. She trained at the Christchurch School of Nursing at the same time as Phillipa Chisholm.
