Awards to coaches

HASTINGS
Messrs V. Parkhouse (Christchurch) and J. Beaumont (Havelock North) took the two major awards made by the New Zealand Swimming Coaches’ Association at its annual conference m Taupo at the week-end.
Mr Parkhouse is “Coach of the Year” for his success with Miss J. Parkhouse. M Treffers, Miss S. Hunter and J. Coutts at the Commonwealth Games and Mr Beaumont won the award for the coach who has done the most for swimming generally and the association in particular.
Golf.— Miss J. Prentice birdied the fourth hole in a suddendeath play-off in Palm Springs to win the $200,000 Colgate-Diana Shore Winner Circle golf tournament—the richest competition in the history of women s professional golf.
Tennis.—P. McNamara (Aus-I tralia) beat an unseeded plaver,! P. Boratisa (Thailand:, 8-6, 6-3, 6-2, to win the men’s singles I final in the Malaysian open! tennis championships. Jumper out.— The British long jumper, Mrs M. Chitty, will retire from athletics only months after finishing eighth in the Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old schoolteacher, who competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. is expecting a baby in November.
