Easy victory for Checkers
Checkers, which has dominated the Canterbury Women’s inter-club basketball competition in recent years, began the 1974 season strongly, with an easy victory over Rangiora. 63-67, in Cowles Stadium on Saturday,
The side owed much to the return of its former New Zealand representative. S. Renneil, who was in exceptional form. She was the highest scorer of the day, with a well-deserved 22 points. Although missing some of its key players from last season, i Checkers never looked like be- . ing beaten. At half-time’ it led. 28-7.
Renneil had splendid support from the Canterbury representative, C. Chaplin, who scored 13 points, and the former New Zealand representative, J. Baker, who contributed 10.
. Mairehau A had a fine win 'over Y.M.C.A.-Rebels at Cowles • Stadium. 57-53.
Despite being beaten. Y.M.C.A.Rebels put up a good defence : and stopped a number of likely . goals. Tills was the first time I in club competition Y.M.C.A. and Rebels had combined their : forces. The combination was still not quite strong enough to ward off the determined Mairehau A: team. The best score for the Maire-: hau team came from B. Miller,! who contributed 14 points with some accurate shooting. She was; backed up by B. Thompson, who. scored eight points, and the former Southland girl. M. E’astier. also with eight. All of these players shot good goals from reasonable distances. 1 Playing in its first A grade game, Mairehau B defeated University A, 58-34 The young Mairehau girls were on their toes all of the time and held a good lead most of the way-. Their coach, Mr K. E. TvuHams, has developed his team of high school girls into a promising side. The half-time score was 34-20 to Mairehau. Although Mairehau’s playing was consistent, the University side must also take some credit for its keen defence, and quick response to the rebounds of Slairehau’s narrowly missed goals. The top acorer for Jlairehau B was K. Adamson, with 15 i points. N. O’Connell was also
prominent with a final tally of nine.
Another team in its first A grade game. Orients, also began the season well, defeating the combined Rex-Burnside team. 41-30. Orients displayed its authority early in the game and at half-time led, 21-10.
S. Constable, P Ruawhui and JI. Williams were the only players in the Orients side to achieve double figures, but the general play of other members of the team was also good.
The Canterbury representative, L. Uren, was in fine form for Burnside. She topped the scoring with 10 points. Results were:
