New career attitudes

The whole idea of a conventional career is beginning to collapse, said Peter Watson in an essay to accompany two recent 8.8. C., radio series on careers, leisure and retirement. The premise on which Watson bases his theory is that far more people than ever before are taking temporary jobs — and not just young girls and office staff,* but engineers, chemists. draughtsmen, computer programmers and others. Moreover, they are doing it from choice: they like variety in work, in col-, leagues, and some find that a variety of experience is a help to promotion. By "temporary”, Watson explains that he means anything from a week or two to three years.
