ETHIOPIA Armed forces put pressure on Govt
Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright? ADDIS ABABA, April 19. The Ethiopian Prime Minister (Mr Endalkachew Makonnen) has ordered former Government Ministers to be confined to their homes.
A mutiny in the armed forces, late in February,
forced the Government Min-; isters to resign. The Prime Minister an-; nounced the confinement! order after a warning yester-| day by the armed forces! that they would intervene if I no immediate action was; taken against former Minis-. ters.
Military sources say that; military pa cols in the capi-' ;ta< will today be discreetly! checking whether security I forces are carrying out the) order. The discreet checks' on the homes of former; 'Ministers are to avoid any (open confrontation with the! civilian Government.
The sources say that in view of persistent demands for the removal of the national police chief, Lieu-tenant-General Yilma Shibeshi, it is questionable whether the police will be in a position to enforce the order. Yesterday in the northern city of Asmara, the police announced that, in the absence of any response to the demand for General Yilma’s dismissal, they were suspending al! routine duties.
