Monument to pioneers

(from Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, April 18. The erection of a monument at some suitable site along the Pukaki-Hermitage State highway commemo.ating the efforts of pioneers who established road access to Mount Cook had been approved by the National Roads Board, it was reported to the No. 15 District Roads Council today. On the recommendation of the chairman (Mr P. M. Newby) it was decided to appoint a sub-committee to look into the matter. Mr M. F. Blakemore (Levels County Council) said the memorial should be of some use to future generations rather than an inanimate object commemorating the past. The possibility should also be considered of creating a rest area with a view of the mountains, said Mr Blakemore. “I do not go along with the concept of a stone monument.”
