ADDINGTON MARKET Store stock in keen demand
Store calves and store lambs had their best sale of the autumn at the Addington market yesterday. This was a direct result of heavy rain in many parts of the province the previous day, for yardings were very small.
The store sheep section drew an entry of only 1800 head, consisting of 1250 store lambs, and 550 breeding ewes.
A big gallery followed the lamb sale, and from the outset the market was buoyant. Some of the wether lambs improved as much as a dollar a head on last week’s good sale. i It was easily the best sale of the autumn, with many pens changing hands at more than $8 a head. The strong market can be attributed largely to the excellent feed situation in nrany districts, rather than the prospect of a strong market for prime stock in the winter. For an April sale, quality] was average. The yarding in-] eluded a fair selection of, shorn Romney and Perendale] cross lambs, a number of I them from the West Coast, I and there was also a selection I of Down cross lambs.
The best of the Romney wether lambs sold to $8.90, shorn
Perendale cross lambs ranged from $6.50 to $8.45, and Down! cross mainly at $7.20 to $8.20,| with some sales to $8.70. Halfbred ewe lambs sold to $lO.lO. There was little of note in the small yarding of breeding ewes. The yarding was made up largely of small lots. Principal sales included two pens of mated Romney ewes at $12.10 to $12.70, the best of a small number of two-tooths fetched $14.10. and odd lots of wethers ranged from $8.50 for Romneys to $10.20 for Perendales.
‘ Sales of store lambs included:— ' Wethers: B. Mercer (Kotuku), > 65 Romneys at $7.30 to $8.45; L. , Smith (Ahaura), 46 Romneys at j $8.60, 28 Down cross at $8.50; A. ■ Rogatski (Kopara), 60 Down cross I at $8 to $8.85; C. L. Reinheimer l(lkamatua), 48 shorn Romneys at . $8.75; A. R. Waghorn (Pigeon Bay I, 107 Down cross at $6.50 to ! $B.lO. Sales of breeding ewes r included:— D. R. Robertson (Ashley),-178 ; mixed-aged Romneys, mated to Down and Romney rams, at $12.20 ! to $12.70; D. S. Latter (Cheviot), f 57 unmated Corriedales at $10.20. i Store calves The store calf sale, which was • 1 confined to districts north of the i Hurunui, drew an entry of only 895 head. This was attributed to the wet conditions prevailing since early on Monday evening. The sale drew 'quite a large gallery, and the market was one of the best of the season. A' line of He refords from the Lakes! Station (Hawarden) accounted for a third of the yarding, and they sold well. While small calves appeared to show no >-hange, many of the medium and good average Hereford and Angus cross steer calves were considered to have been firmer by $2 to $3. Many buyers, it seems, remain optimistic, in spite of the marked easing in the market for all classes of beef. Large steer calves sold to $9O, good average at $74 to $BO, medium $6O to $7O, and small at $46 to $56. Heifer calves had probably their best sale of the season, i although it was evident that | quite a number of them were! being bought as a breeding proposition. On recent markets, the medium to good calves were las much as $5 to $6 stronger. : However, those not suitable as a I breeding proposition were un- | changed. I The best of the Herefords sold at $65 to $72, medium at $53 to $6O, and small at $3B to $4B. Best ' Angus and Angus cross heifers sold to $76. medium at $52 to $6O, and small down to $4O. . . Sales of store calves included:— ’ Steers: Lakes Station j (Hawarden), 222 Herefords at $46 to $75; David J. Parsons (Ward), 1 66 Angus and Angus cross at $70.50 to $9O; 12 Herefords at 584: G. B. F.
