Re-entry permits

WELLINGTON, April 17.
The Cabinet today instructed the Minister of Immigration (Mr Colman) to publicise the fact that British people living in New Zealand who have not taken out New Zealand citizenship can easily obtain re-entry permits if they wish to leave this country temporarily. Mr Watt said the many applications for citizenship after the recent measures taken to restrict British immigration reflected a fear by people that if they left New Zealand they might not be allowed back in.
In fact, people living in New Zealand and wishing to leave temporarily could obtain re-entry permits without trouble from the Labour Department.
Mr Watt said it should be strongly emphasised that people did not have to be New Zealand citizens to obtain a re-entry permit.
