Demotion of Kirkpatrick
/From J. K. BROOKS)
WELLINGTON
Was the 1972-73 All Blackcaptain, I. A. Kirkpatrick, “set up” to be deposed from the leadership of the All Black team to tour Australia?
In yesterday’s main trial, Kirkpatrick led a team which was heavily beaten by an experienced side containing nine All Blacks. The captain of this side was A. R. Leslie, who will lead the All Blacks in Australia.
His selection recalls the choice of P. B. Vincent as captain of the All Blacks in his first test in 1956. Leslie, who is 28. led the Petone team on its recent tour of South Africa. Whereas the other three teams generally ran the ball from tapkicks, when they were awarded penalties, even when a goal was a possibility, Leslie’s kickers, J. F. Karam and B. G. Williams, pointed the ball at the posts. The points against Kirkpatrick’s XV mounted steadily. I It was also evident that Leslie did not tell Karam to kick for goal. The policy apipeared to be pre-determined.
