“Close to civil emergency"
The flooding in Christchurch came close to causing a civil emergency, Superintendent G. Ywentyman, acting officer in charge of the Christchurch police district. said yesterday. : “It would not have taken much more water to have /eally 'created evacuation and complex problems,” he |said. Mr Twentyman said that ■ the various rescue groups I had worked together well, j “The result was that we: were prepared for most I eventualities. It was more 'than pleasing to see this because it is only actual incidences such as this where our plans can be tested. “We are grateful to the organisations that assisted | us and for offers of assistance received from individuals.” he said. The flooding was the first crisis to be controlled from the new emergency operations room in the Central Police Station.
