Kurdish claim

(IV Z P A. -Reuter—Copyright)

ANKARA. April 17.

Kurdish rebels claim to have shot down eight Iraqi jet fighters and four helicopters in northern Iraq during the last two weeks.

The Voice of Kurdistan radio service, monitored in eastern Turkey last night, also said that the rebels had captured Mount Serfin, near the town of Shaqlava, after an eight-hour gun-battle. The radio reported that 16 Iraqi soldiers and three Kurdish guerrillas were killed in the clash, and added that

Arab residents were abandoning the town. One aircraft, a MIG fighter, was shot down while dropping supplies to ■ the remnants of a beleaguered Iraqi division near Geyli Alibey (Alibey Pass), the report said.

Two weeks ago, the Voice of Kurdistan claimed that this division had been routed in the largest single clash since fighting erupted in mountainous north Iraq last month.

Kurdish rebels, led by the aged General Mullah Mustafa Barzani, are fighting for self-rule in the region, and have rejected the Bagdad regime’s latest terms for limited Kurdish autonomy.
