Equal pay action
An application to the Arbitration Court for the implementation of the first step of equal pay for Canterbury Oyster Workers, under the Equal Pay Act, was adjourned in Christchurch yesterday. Granting the adjournment, the president of the Court (Judge A. P. Blair) said: “the union claims there is anomaly under the Stabilisation Regulations.
“If this is so, it is not within the jurisdiction of this court to decide. “The situation is confused, but if there is an anomaly it should be resolved before embarking on the equal pay exercise.
“The union is clearly not prepared to proceed. “We propose to adjourn, for 14 days. If the parties have not then decided what they are going to do then upon application of either side we shall fix a date for a hearing.” Mr G. G. Walker appeared for the union and Mr C. M. Wishart for the employers. On the bench with Judge Blair, were Messrs W. C. McDonnell (workers representative) and W. N. Hewitt (employers representative).
