Committal for trial
A man alleged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday that two youths knocked him to the ground and robbed his wallet containing $5 in an incident in Worcester Street about 6.30 p.m. on October 23.
After the taking of depositions before Messrs W. H. Small and R. Jones, Justices of the Peace, the youths were committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Stephen David Charlett, aged 19, an unemployed concrete worker (Mr N. R. W. Davidson), and Augustine Clement Smith, aged 19, a foundry worker (Mr G. M. Brodie), pleaded not guilty to the joint charge of robbing Colin George Fowler and were granted bail until the trial. Charlett was also charged with receiving a stolen cheque on December 4. He was remanded on bail to February 20 for the taking of depositions on this charge. No plea was entered. After the hearing of evidence on a charge against Charlett of unlawfully getting into a car on December 5 the charge was dismissed.
Mr Fowler said that he was knocked to the ground outside the Christchurch Club about 6.30 p.m. on October 23. He said he suffered a bruised head and elbow. His wallet was taken from his rear pocket, he said.
