Tavern licence in Rai Valley

(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, January 16. Rai Valley is to have a licensed tavern. The Licensing Control Commission, in a reserved decision, has granted an application by Nelson Hotels, Ltd, to transfer the licence of the present Belgrove Hotel to a tavern site at Rai Valley.

The application was opposed by 90 signatories to a plea on behalf of the Trout Hotel at Canvastown, and by Belgrove residents who objected to losing their hotel. The commission said it would not be right to refusethe removal of the licence to) [Rai Valley on the ground of; [loss of trade at the Trout; [Hotel, 12 miles away. I No doubt new premises at [Rai Valley would have some; )effect on the liquor turnover' at Canvastown, the commis-

s sion said. But it was not con- , vinced that any public ret qui remen t for accommodation 1 would be affected to such an ' extent that it would be fair ■ and equitable to refuse a . liquor licence at Rai Valley. Of the original 90 persons <who signed the application >‘for an objectors poll, 28 did : not appear on the roll of elec-' : tors, and 31 later asked that' their names be withdrawn,! :the decision said. This left! j|only 42 qualified signatories,; ■ well short of the minimum 50 ■ required for such a poll. 1
