PARAPLEGIC GAMES 18-medal haul for N.Z. team

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. The New Zealand men won 18 medals in the field events on the fourth day of the Commonwealth Paraplegic Carnes yesterday, collecting nine gold, three silver and six bronze.

And at the bowls venue, the 20-year-old Miss Gay Kissick won the women’s singles—her first gold medal in international competition, and New Zealand’s fifteenth for the Games so far. The star of the day for New Zealand was R. Hynds, of Tauranga, who in class IB took the gold medals in all events he contestedshot put, discus and javelin. Hynds, the team vice-cap-tain, set a world mark in the discus, and Commonwealth records in the other two. MOORE’S DOUBLE New Zealand’s other gold medals came from G. Marett, D. Moore (two), G. Condon, is. Scott and W. Lean. Scott, I from Invercargill, also won a silver in the smallbore rifle shooting. Miss Kissick’s win in the ; bowls produced one of the : major surprises. With only] .two months’ experience at the sport, she beat the defending champion, Gwen Buck (England), 12-8. Miss Kissick attributes much of her new-found bowls success to the leading man player, V. J. Sellars, also from Palmerston North. He interested Miss Kissick in the sport and ha£ been coaching her. She beat another highlyrated England player, Pam Barnard, in a semi-final, 13-7. ONLY CANADIAN The only Canadian com-: peting in the Games, D.i Curren, finished fourth in the small-bore rifle shooting, but his performance will not be recognised. Curren, who paid his own fare to New Zealand for the Games after the 18member Canadian team withdrew because of lack of

finance, was competing by invitation only. Results: MEN Athletics Discus.—Class IB: R. Hynds (N.Z.), 13.94, 1; P. Reid (Jam.), 12.88. 2; B. McMillan (Aus.), 10.76, 3. Class 2: G.
