Lyttelton busy from today

There will be heavy demands on Lyttelton from today. Berthage and labour will be in much demand. This morning, visitors will see some entrants in the Wales Auckland to Lyttelton yacht race. The early arrival of the Britannia today will be followed by the arrival of the frigate H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury tomorrow morning and there will be an impressive parade of merchant shipping. Four British cargo liners are due in a matter of hours. They include the Timaru Star, serving the New Zealand, North American (Pacific coast) trade, the Piako, with general cargo from Britain, the Canopic, linking New Zealand with the West Indies, and the Wenchow, linking this country with the Far East. Expected last evening was the Westmorland (British) to load refrigerated and general cargo for Bermuda, Mediterranean ports and Southampton, and the Union Company’s Koraki, with hard wood and steel from Western Australia and South Australia respectively. Visitors today will also see, still in port, two Japanese vessels, the Tacoma Maru and the Japan Roble; the Medic (British); the coastal tanker Erne; the Chathams trader Holmdale; and the former minesweeper H.M.N.Z.S. Inverell. Due this week-end are the Tama Maru (Japanese), with a large load of British motorvehicles. and the Union Company’s Union New Zealand, with heavy New South Wales cargo. An interesting week-end visitor should be the Dutch passengercargo vessel Straat Luzon, which serves the trade with South Africa and East Africa. There has been a lull in this service: recently, because of the with-' drawal of the Straat Clement,, which has been renamed and' placed on a different service. The China Navigation Company’s. Wanliu (under charter) has replaced her. Next week, interesting vessels will include the Games cruise liners Ocean Monarch and Marco Polo, and the destroyer H.M.A.S. Anzac. In the meantime, the interisland passenger steamer Rangatira, with heavy passenger loads, is coming and going rapidly. Waterfront visitors are warned to take great care during their inspection tours. B.J.McS., of Christchurch: The term, “dog watch,” comes from “dodge watch.” In other days, working “watch and watch”— four hours on and four off (the

iatter if lucky), was 4 to 8, 8 to 12 noon and 12 to 4. To break the dreariness of having the same watch every night, the dog watches were invented. Thus the evening 4 to 8 watch was split into two watches (“dodge watches”), 4 to 6 and 6 to 8. This caused alternation. Yarns were spun in the dog watches, but today shipboard television has mostly spelt the death knell of such pleasures. ARRIVALS Koraki (4.30 p.m.), 3790, Capt. J. Stoddart, Dunedin (U.S.S.).
