Joining together
There seems to be a true feeling of unity for the Commonwealth Games.
The Games song, “Join Together,” was sung at a Christchurch hotel last evening, the band receiving vociferous support from the many athletes who had gathered there.
Athletes representing most of the Commonwealth countries fraternised at the hotel. A quick survey showed that 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the crowd there were Games competitors. A remark by an Isle of Man competitor about New Zealand women was: “They all look very healthy—maybe it’s the climate.” Rules of dress have been relaxed in the lounge bars of some Christchurch hotels—but one must have a Games pass to gain admittance if wearing jeans. A security guard at one hotel said: “We could have refused several athletes admission for not wearing the right clothes—but as they are visitors, we let them through.”
