After being bogged down by rain for two days, the world gliding championships got off to a shaky start yesterday, with France taking an early lead. Fields along the 269-kilo-metre course were littered with gliders during the first event. No standard class gliders finished the first 100 kilometres, and the standard class racing was declared mo contest.
Enough open class machines got past the minimum distance to allow placing* J P Catry (France) was provisionally placed first, with a 219-kilometer flight, and F. Ragot (France) was second, 216 kilometres. G. Motfat (United States), finished third, at 209 kilometres. Catry and Moffat piloted » Nimbus 2, and Ragos was in an A.S.W. 17.
