GIANT POLICEMAN
The giant 22-stone English policeman, G. Capes (pictured above), is strongly favoured to win the Commonwealth Games shot contest after his great throw of 67ft 6|in, achieved just four days before his team left for New Zealand.
This performance, which
took place at London’s Crystal Palace ground, set new British and Commonwealth records. The previous Commonwealth record, which was set by Capes while competing in East Berlin last July, was 67ft 2in. Even before his recordbreaking throw, Capes headed the rankings for
this event. His closest rivals on recent form appear to be his team-mate, M. Winch, and B. Pumie (Canada). Capes is also a medal chance in the discus, in which he might compete on Sunday. His best performance of 192 ft 7£in puts him sixth on the Commonwealth ranking list. Another Englishman, W. Tancred, is at the top of the rankings with New I Zealand’s R. D. Tait: second.
