Robalan beats Cup field

The red-hot favourite, Robalan, eclipsed last night’s Wellington Cup field. Backed to almost prohibitive odds, Robalan left Hutt Park patrons with no doubt as to which was the best pacer at the meeting. The Cup was run at a fast clip. Ryal scorching away to a two-length lead early and maintaining it for* the first 1600 metres. At this point, Robalan was last, on the outer. D. D. Nyhan, however, was obviously unconcerned about the early tactics, and when he let Robalan go lie picked the leader up within 200 metres and went to a two-length advantage. Into the straight, it was still Robalan bv two lengths, >vith the others struggling; and Nyhan did not move an inch in the run to the post. As predicted. Young Quinn took second place. He was second last on the outer mainly,

but could not match Robalan's, sprint in the back straight, and ended up trailing his rival to the turn. Although his driver, C. Hunter, tried everything to get Young Quinn past the leader, he had no chance. Hi Foyle again showed his great racing spirit, taking third place. He raced wide, without the trail mainly, but did not look like giving in, and held the rest of the field off easily. Fourth home was J. Dalgety’s representative. Dwayne, which came with a spirited late bid to snatch his share of the prizemoney. Results: — VAN DIEMAN HANDICAP $1300; Cl; trotters; 2400 m. 4/4 LARNACH CASTLE (2) It G.
