Opera trust disappointed

The chairman of the Auckland Theatre Trust (Mr R. B. Walker) said that he was “stunned and bitterly disappointed” that the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council had rejected an application from the Mercury Theatre for a $30,000 grant. The money was to have been used for the purchase and reconstruction of the Mercury Theatre in Auckland city.

Asked why the application had been rejected, the acting director of the arts council (Miss J. Kerr) said from Wellington that the council had had to adopt a policy which excluded grants to buildings whi bahc h deenit?llnbyvi N which had been completed before the 1973-74 financial year, the Press Association reported.
