Miners ease on quiet Australian markets

Industrial stocks were firm on Australian exchanges yesterday, but mining stocks were weaker. Trading was very quiet and moves in both sectors were small. B.H.P. was 14c down at (870 c after Friday’s report,] (and C.S.R. was 2c down at! 498 c. Among the mining issues,! C.R.A. moved up 6c to 686 c ■ but other members of the! group did not fare so well.

Among the industrials, Tom Piper was unchanged at 230 c. Reckit and Coleman, which plans a bonus issue, did not trade, but was up 10c on a buyer’s quote of 385 c, E.Z. Industries moved ahead 3c to 448 c after the announcement of a zinc price rise, Herald rose 3c at 408 c and Elders gained 5c at 260 c. Banks were firm, with the exception of the Bank of New South Wales, which fell 4c to 850 c. Retailers also did well, Myers, Woolworths and David Jones making small gains, while Coles was unchanged, but Waltons was down slightly. On the mining boards, Bougainville was unchanged while Mt Isa Mines rose 6c to 293 c. B.H. South, however, fell slightly. Western Mining firmed 2c to 235 c, and Great Boulder was 5c firmer at 125 c. Poseidon dropped 10c to 950 c. Among the gold stocks, Emperor was 5c lower at 295 c, but G.M.K. was steady, and Hill 50 moved up 2c to 33c.
