ELUSIVE SPEECH

One of the speakers at a seminar on New Zealand defence policy organised by the Christchurch Branch of the Institute of International Affairs at the week-end almost had no speech to give. Mr M. McKinley, a former naval officer and a member of the Opposition advisory secretariat on foreign affairs, spent some time last week working on a speech which would present aspects of the National Party’s thinking on defence. Then his home in Wellington was burgled and along with some personal possessions the defenceminded burglar took Mr McKinley’s notes for his address and the duplicated copies he intended to distribute to the audience. Mr McKinley rewrote the speech as far as possible from memory. But on Thursday night, after a Budget night party, the cleaners moved into Mr McKinley’s office and the second version of the speech went out with the rubbish. The third version of the address—rough notes only —was barely finished in time for delivery on Saturday morning.
