SELECTION ON MERIT

(N.Z. Press .Association.; WELLINGTON. The Government’s decision that South African teams touring New Zealand must be selected on merit applied equally to all snorts and to all countries, said the Denuty Prime Minister (Mr Watt) in Parliament. Debating the Recreation and Sport Bill, Mr Watt first said the policy would apoly to sports other than Rugbv. Challenged by Opposition cries of "What about other countries,” “What about Uganda,” and “How about General Amin,” Mr Watt then added that it would apply to other countries. “Our policy,” he said, “is that all sporting bodies who invite teams to New Zealand should invite teams who are selected on merit, and no-one should be invited to take part in trials for these teams who is not selected on merit.

“If we apply this principle to one sport we must apply it to all. and if we apply it to one country we must apply it. to all.”
