REJECTION BY GOVT
Tenants’ Assn aid scheme (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Government has rejected an application by the Tenants’ Protection Association for financial help, and the State Advances Corporation has issued summonses against the association for back rent for four Auckland properties used to house needy families. The association’s secretary (Mr P. Halloran) said that the Auckland housing situation had worsened. His organisation was voluntary and unpaid, and was the largest such organisation dealing with housing, <the country's No. 1 social evil.” Branches had been set up in Wellington and Christchurch, and another would be established in Hamilton this month. The association asked the Government to establish a trust board with an annual grant of $lOO,OOO to administer emergency family houses and provide social welfare services for associated problems. The Minister of Social Welfare (Mr King) told Mr Halloran in a letter that “There is no existing programme under which financial assistance could be approved for the purpose you have proposed.” The Minister said departmental social workers would co-operate in counselling tenants facing difficulties.
