GENERAL: The Christmas Island Phosphate Com- j mission, through its managing agents The British Phos- . phate Commissioners, mines and upgrades by various < processes and ships phosphates from Christmas Island, j Indian Ocean. i SCOPE: The project will encompass an examination of the chemical and mineral composition of “B” and “C” grade phosphate and in particular an investigation of mineralogical changes accompanying heat treatment of this material with a view to opening up areas for investigation towards increasing the utilisation of this material as a fertiliser. The project offers a unique opportunity for fundamental research combining field and laboratory work. It is expected that the project would consist of three , main stages: 1 A survey of reports on previous and current research; ; A period at Christmas Island for field investigation; 1 A period on the mainland for laboratory work. In this ’ respect it is anticipated that access to advanced equipment can be arranged. i QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Geology/Mineralogy, : Applied Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and demonstrable research ability. Experience in phosphate technology and/or solid state heat reactions would be of particular value. SALARY: The appointment will be made within the salary range $6500-$BOOO (Aust.) per annum, subject I to qualification and experience.
