Jockey warned after inquiry
There is no rule of; racing covering careless' or incompetent riding i during training gallops, j
This was found yesterday by a sub-committee of the Canterbury District Committee when it was conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the falls of Proud Ben and Surge Again in a barrier practice at Riccarton on January 25. After hearing D. E. Reed, the rider of an unnamed three-year-old; J. C. Hitchcock, rider of Proud Ben; R. J. McCann, rider of Surge Again; and G. D. Lee, rider of Proud Ben, the subcommittee found that the accident was caused by Reed’s mount, which crossed immediately in front of Proud Ben, bringing him down; and that Surge Again fell over the top of him. The sub-committee yesterday found that Reed was
guilty of careless riding; he had not taken immediate steps to straighten his mount, when the horse started to bore in. Reed was warned by Mr P. D. Hall, chairman of the sub-committee, for not exercising greater care when riding a “green” horse at J barrier practice. The sub-committee’s fifad-j ings and notes of the evi-l dence are to be forwarded: to the New Zealand Racing Conference for such action! as it considers necessary.
