Mayoral visit to Australia

The Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch (Mr and Mrs N. G. Pickering) will visit Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide during their visit to Australia next month. They will leave Christchurch i on March 4, and return on March 17. They will be the guests of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Adelaide (Mr and Mrs W. H. Hayes) during their stay in that city, their visit being primarily to consolidate the sister-city relationship between Adelaide and Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Pickering will attend two South Australian state luncheons and visit Flinders University, the Barossa Valley, the almostcompleted Adelaide Festival Theatre, and Elizabeth, a new city of 55,000 people about 18 miles from Adelaide. Mr Pickering said yesterday that he was particularly interested in the methods of refuse collection and disposal in Sydney and Melbourne, and he would also be looking at the way traffic and parking problems are being dealt with in these two cities. In Canberra, Mr Pickering’s special interest will be town planning: Canberra is considered to be one of the best laid-out cities in the world. He will meet the Lord Mayors of Sydney and Melbourne and the Commissioner of the Australian Capital Territory.
