Warning to landlords

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 2.

Landlords who do not reply to notices sent to them by rent-review authorities might have their rents determined for them.

The Minister of Labour (Mr Watt) said today that he was concerned that in many cases landlords were not replying to notices sent to them by the authorities, after applications for review had been received from tenants.

Altogether, 132 notices have been sent out, but only 61 landlords have replied. Auckland landlords are

worst — only 29 replies to the 78 notices sent. 142 APPEALS ALREADY

The rent-appeal authorities had received 142 applications since they were established, just before Christmas, said Mr Watt.

The most had been in Auckland, 82. Christchurch was next, well behind, with 10 applications and then Wellington, with eight. Most of the applications had been received after the holiday break, he said. Twenty determinations had been made by the authorities and several were expected in the next few days. "1 am considering asking the rent-appeal authorities to determine a rent for any apolications in which the landlord does not reply to notices’, said the Minister. “The landlord will have the opportunity to appeal in such cases.”

“DO NOT HESITATE” He said that people should know that they had the opportunity to apply to the local rent-appeal authority, at the Labour Department, if thev were being charged an unfair rent and thev should not hesitate to take the opnortunity. “There is a rent-review authority in each district office of the Department of Labour. Anv tenant who wishes to know if he has a

case for appealing against his rent should go to the nearest Labour Department office, where there is a leaflet explaining the scope of the regulations and his rights under them.” Mr Watt said that consideration was being given to making this leaflet and the appeal application forms available at certain post offices, in areas where high rents were a particular problem.
