Night-time courts

(N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, February 2. Australia’s Attorney - General (Senator Lionel Murphy) announced on his return from an overseas visit to Britain and the United States today that he would recommend that night courts be set up to hear charge matters in petty sessions in courts under Commonwealth jurisdiction. He said that a Court should be available to hear the case as soon as a person was arrested so that people were not kept in gaol or released on bail until the first court met the next morning. “This is a matter that offends the civil liberties of the people, and we will act on it as soon as possible,” he said. Senator Murphy said that the night courts should be in operation within a year.
