State houses
Sir, —An interesting point comes to light in your report in today’s issue of the person who bought the country’s 'first State house. To Mrs McGregor, who said she “would not accept less than SI8,000” for the house she paid $2500 for, might I suggest that the Government should have set a more realistic price and purchasing conditions on the property in the first place, more in the style of things Mrs McGregor has in mind for other would-be buyers of the same house today. It is hoped that the taxpayer, and particularly landlords, will nave the right of appeal to the Labour Government’s proposed rent boards over the nominal rental charged for these houses and that buyers of State houses are prevented from having their cake and eating it too when selling one of these homes they bought from the Government for a song.—Yours, etc R. B. HEFFERNAN. December 8, 1972.
