Training more teachers
Sir, —Your editorial suggests more teachers if the Currie Report is to be implemented. The principal of the secondary department of the Teachers’ College tells us that 200 newly trained teachers have not been able to secure appointments, although there are 40 vacancies in Southland. This suggests teachers are not prepared to move into some localities. I know of one teacher leaving college with a diploma, who has applied for over 20 positions from South Westland to a remote area at the top of the North Island; yet she still is without a job. As for married women returning to teaching, I approached an inspector with this end in view and was told I would have to go out of the area and make a name for myself before securing a job here—an absolute impossibility when one’s home and family are here. No wonder students become disillusioned and drop out of teaching.— ! Yours, etc., REDUNDANT TEACHER.
