France has been urged at the United Nations to stop nuclear testing in the South Pacific. The Trusteeship Committee of the General Assembly said such tests endangered the life and environment of the peoples in the area.

The request was made in a resolution calling for the end of colonial status of 17 small island territories in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The vote was 83 to 4, with 14 abstentions.
