Otago first in cycling meeting
Canterbury lost the interprovincial title it won last year, and Otago had its first success, in the triangular cycling meeting at Kew Bowl, Invercargill, on Saturday.
Otago won with 26 points to Canterbury’s 19. Southland was another point behind.
Canterbury gained some revenge in the novice contest. winning convincingly although it had only four riders to the six from each of the other centres.
The only Canterbury sprinter to win his match race was P. T. P. Radburnd. with R. E. Knight, the run-her-up in the national championship last year, losing to E. H. Thurlow, who won the bronze medal. The double-harness pursuit teams were also unsuccessful. R. M. G. A. Heyde and C. J. Tabak were third in their race, and P. A. Jesson
and J. H. J. Chesmar second — ,7sec behind Otago. In the first of the one-mile races, the best Canterbury performer was A. A. Paviell, but he was only fifth. There was more success in the other, with Tabak, P. L. Paviell, and Heyde filling three of of the first four places. Canterbury started the 10 miles — the last event — a point behind Otago. But the poor relation of South Island cycling made sure of over-all victory by instigating a break which included two of its riders. Thurlow won the race in the slow time of 23min 55seC; J. K. Fowler and G, R. Sibley both won their 500-metre races, with A. J. Bruce second and R. J. Amtman third in the other. In the first of! the 2000 metre races, Sibley and Bruce were first: and second, with Fowler first and Amtman! third, in the other.
Cricket.— Scores at stumps on the third day of a Sheffield Shield match at Melbourne were: Victoria 276 and 243/4 IK, R. Stackpole 76, B. Scholes 82). Western Australia 354 (R. Edwards 158).
