Lamb helps stability
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 10.
The British Minister of Agriculture and Food (Mr Joseph Godber) was given Argentine and New Zealand meat suppliers part of the credit for preventing further increases in the price of meat sold to housewives in Britain.
Mr Godber, speaking at the Smithfield Cattle Show, said the Government’s recent action in suspending the import tariff on beef imports tad encouraged Argentine suppliers to increase their shipments to Britain and to stablise their prices. New Zealand lamb had also been n good supply, and its price ncreases had also been less. “Together, these are an mportant factor in helping o contain the price increases or home supplies,” he said. Rising living standards throughout the world had 'ed to a big increase in the iemand for meat, especially for beef. This had created a world shortage, he added. Britain, for its part, was trying to overcome this by increasing its production of meat. “Already there has been a marked increase in the size’ of our beef and 'amb-breeding herds,” said Mr Godber.
