Disappointing swimming times

The only thing out of the ordinary at the inter-club swimming carnival at the Waltham 1 Pool on Saturday was that it was held in the evening, starting at 6 p.m instead of the usual 2 p.m. for an outdoor carnival. No records were broken at the i carnival and times generally: were mediocre—not surprisingly I considering the day—and a disappointing feature was that seve-, ral of Canterbury’s top swim- ; mers were not competing. The younger age groups were; well supported and for swimmers who qualify for the national Speedo teleprinter finals next Saturday it was their last Scompetitive swim before this important carnival. G. Dinnison fWharenui) recorded the fastest time in the , 100 metres freestyle but with a , time outside his best and out- ; side the minute barrier. His time was Imin I.9sec. A. B. Kindred (Wharenui) was ; second but the best performance ; w as that of B. Honeybone (St I, AI bans > who was only beaten ; by .Isec by Kindred, in record-:; ing Imin 3.ssec. Of the girls Lynne Rowe j (Wharenui) had the best timet with a consistent Imin 7.4 sec. | The best performance in the j • JOO metres backstroke was from,; Donald Carlson (Elmwood), a Canadian boy who has recently j j settled in Christchurch with his r parents. An under 14 competitor. his time of Imin 18sec was, j • very good one. ; Honeybone, after his freestyle ] swim had the fastest time for ( the 100 metres open breaststroke 3 recording a very good Imin 2lsec 5 while Miss Z. Wilson (Wharenui) ( had the best time among the j firls with Imin 32.1 sec. Miss A. I rwin (Beckenham 1 was only q .9s ec slower in another heat. J. Adams (Beckenham) was well ( clear of his rivals in the under 2 14 section and his time of Imin 36. Isec was creditable. 1 The lack of strong butterfly 2 swimmers in the centre was 1 shown in the times recorded in I the butterfly events. 3

Two young girls had a hard struggle in a heat of the eight lengths individual medley. Both returned good times but Roseanne Baker (Sockburn Park) with a time of 4min 3.4 sec had an edge over Janice Murdoch (Whai renui) who was 2.7 sec further I back.
