The Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association started a new round on Saturday, the leader, Hornby, and Merivale-Papanui. which is three points behind, finishing the first day in an interesting position. Merivale-Papanui declared at 155 for nine, the main contributors being B. Malden (46) and J. Krone (41). In reply, Hornby was 79 for four at stumps with D. Reardon unbeaten on 40. Hornby’s prolific scorer, J. Fleming. was dismissed for 26 and the burden will now be with Reardon.

Although losing two early wickets. Waltham recovered to compile a useful 175, J. Milne again batting well for 54. He was ably assisted by J. Wilson (49) and R. Cooper (24). D. Quested and K. McAlwee both bowled wtell.

Woolston W.M.C. also started badly and with five down for 87 at stumps, it could face a hard task next Saturday. Beckenham started surely enough to reach 86 for the loss iof three wickets, but then [collapsed. After a slight reicovery, it was dismissed for 103. Heathcote had a disastrous start —22 for five —but Walklin (29) helped it to reach 73 for seven at stumps. At Burnside, the home side was 91 for seven in reply to Sumner’s 142 for eight declared. Next Saturday should be a tense struggle although, with both teams on the bottom of the ladder, it could open up for an exciting finish. SENIOR A Merivale-Papanui 155/9 declared (B. Malden 46. A. Women’s cricket St Albans, with a first innings win over Western, took the lead in the senior women’s cricket competition after the first game in the second round of matches was completed on Saturday. j St Albans was out for 189 on Saturday, J. Lord, carrying her ; overnight total from 71 to 87. s Western made a good start to its first innings. 51 being added; for the first wicket, but the I team then had a sensational collapse and was out for only 79. ■ S. Rattray with five wickets [ and J. Lord, four, caused West-; ern’s downfall. In the other game Mai Moa had an easy win over Hagley. Mai Moa made 36 in its first innings and declared at 137 for three wickets in its second with M. Turner scoring an unbeaten 62. Hagley had managed only 21 in its first innings and fared ! worse in its second innings, making only 11. S. Roberts and J. Lee with four wickets each were ; the destroyers of the Hagley innings.
