The Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association started a new round on Saturday, the leader, Hornby, and Merivale-Papanui. which is three points behind, finishing the first day in an interesting position. Merivale-Papanui declared at 155 for nine, the main contributors being B. Malden (46) and J. Krone (41). In reply, Hornby was 79 for four at stumps with D. Reardon unbeaten on 40. Hornby’s prolific scorer, J. Fleming. was dismissed for 26 and the burden will now be with Reardon.

Although losing two early wickets. Waltham recovered to compile a useful 175, J. Milne again batting well for 54. He was ably assisted by J. Wilson (49) and R. Cooper (24). D. Quested and K. McAlwee both bowled wtell.

Woolston W.M.C. also started badly and with five down for 87 at stumps, it could face a hard task next Saturday. Beckenham started surely enough to reach 86 for the loss iof three wickets, but then [collapsed. After a slight reicovery, it was dismissed for 103. Marsh 6/67) beat Western 79 (E. Rouse 28, S. Cowles 22; Rattray 5/20, Lord 4/18) on the first innings.
