The Canterbury girls’ tennis team won its zone of the Howe Shield at Blenheim at the weekend by’ beating both Nelson and Marlborough without the loss of a match The fourth team in the zone. West Coast, was a last-minute; withdrawal because players were; not available. The top girl for Canterbury. J. Phillips, was given a stern test by the Marlborough top. H. McNabb, but aU other matches were won comfortably. S. Chapman, who played the second singles for Canterbury in each case, was in fine form and controlled her ground strokes excellently. Results:— Canterbury v. Marlborough Singles.—J. PhiUlns beat H McNabb. 6-3, 7-5: S Chapman beat 1.. Jackson. 6-1, 6-4. Doubles—Phillips and J. Dalzell beat C. Marfell and McNabb. 6-0. 6-1. Canterbury won, 3-0 Canterbury v. Nelson Singles—Phillips beat 11 McGuire 6-1. 6-2: Chapman heat S. Nichol. 60 S-i. Doubles.—Phillips and Dalzell beat Nichol and E Rogers, 6-2, 6-2 Canterbury won, 3-0.
