Country XI in upset

Northern New South Wales, needing 239 runs to beat Pakistan on the final day of a three-day match, ran a bye off the last ball to win by two wickets yesday.
The Country side was 234 for eight wickets when the last over of the day was bowled by Asif Masood.
Its capjain, M. Hill, Who was dropped at one and three in his match-winning innings of 32, ran the bye to take the Country XI to its first victory over an international side.
Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan captain, nearly singlehandedly broke through the side’s second innings, taking five wickets for 78 off 14 overs. But he was given [ harsh treatment with six overs to go by Hill, who lifted him over mid-wicket for two sixes in one over. Pakistan, which was sent in to bat on the first day, declared at 300 for nine, and the Northern New South Wales side followed with a sporting declaration of 249 for seven. Pakistan was then dismissed for only 187, the legspinner, J. Watkins, taking | six for 38 off 7.4 overs. Only ; Mushtaq Mohammed, with a strong 60, defied the Country bowling as the Pakistan batsmen. in their search for quick runs, rashly threw away early wickets. The Country side, when! the 15-over rule was applied,) needed 94 runs to win. T.| Walters, the brother of the! test batsman, K. D. Walters, batting with the aid of a runner because of an injured groin, hammered the Pakistan bowling and scored 57. Walters and A. Steele added 95 runs in 56 minutes in a fourth-wicket partnership which paved the way for Hill’s late flourish and an unexpected Pakistan defeat.
