Work continues at Albany
(Hew Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 8. While tractors and trucks worked on the university site at Albany today, speculation on the new Government’s attitude to a second University for Auckland increased.
Both the Prime Ministerelec (Mr Kirk and the man expected to get the education portfolio (Mr P. A. Amos) have spoken against the proposed university, and, say some observers in Wellington, there has been a gra-
dual hardening of opinion on the subject in Labour ranks. However, in Auckland, Dr M. E. R. Bassett, the new member of Parliament for Waitemata, an electorate which includes the site, has spoken in favour of the site. Dr Bassett said this evening that the establishment of a university at Albany would assure open entry for students in the Auckland Metropolitan area. Dr Bassett, a lecturer at the University of Auckland, said that he had been in favour of the second Auckland university’s being at Albany since the idea was first suggested. Other developments include: The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Auckland (Dr C. J. Maiden) has asked the new Government to have full discussions before taking any action which would affect the future of tertiary education in Auckland. A suggestion has been made by the chairman of the Auckland Technical Institute Council (Sir Reginald Savory) that the Albany project should be dropped in favour of a full-sized technical institute at Whangarei.
