Inter-island service
Sir, —In reference to the timely comments being, expressed regarding the drawbacks associated with the Lyttelton-Wellington steamer express service, I got the impression during the years I was a regular user that the term “express” related mainly to the unseemly haste with which one was hustled out of the cabin only to stand round awaiting the unloading of one’s car. No doubt this operation has been speeded up since the introduction of drive-off facilities, but it seemed to me that the main reason for the way one was hustled out of the cabin was
to facilitate the changing of sheets, etc., by the stewards so that they could go ashore to seek a more lucrative source of employment than Would be gained In tips from assisted passengers. — Yours, otc EX-PASSENGER. December 8, 1972.
