RACING Black Rod, Young Ida well fancied

"The FreM" Special Service WELLINGTON. The Te Parae stallion, Oncidium, has prospects of one of his best days yet in New Zealand with Purdie, Young Ida, and Black Rod engaged in the feature races at the Wanganui summer meeting today.

Oncidium’s popularity with Australian buyers since his first progeny has meant that many of his star gallopers have been exported.

But through breeders who choose to retain their, stock and the occasional local buyer game enough to take on Australian bidders at the national sales, his presence here is becoming more and more evident. It is because of such a buyer as the former Racing Conference president. Mr R. A. Whyte, that Black Rod heads the field for the Wanganui club's new race—the Championship Stakes. Mr Whyte paid $5500 for Black Rod. and the gelding has justified the expense, although twice this season—in an early sprint and in the New Zealand Derby—he has been disappointing. Good chance One of the best chances below the top-weight may be the consistent filly Native Track, and Strike Lucky. The presence of Purdie and Young Ida in the Birch Handicap and the Bristol Handicap is due to the fact that both are raced by their breeders. Purdie carries the colours of J. H. T. and P. N. Duncan, and Young Ida those of J. H. T. Duncan. Purdie finished out of the money at Levin, but like several others he pulled early, then was outsprinted. He is thoroughly consistent and from a good draw in a big field looks a good prospect. Kartika has not raced since she won the New Zealand Cup on November 4, but that was no accident In her previous three runs she had won two provincial handicaps in company similar to this. She does not seem unduly penalised with the topweight of Bst 81b. The speed merchant Kalgoorlie has drawn No. 1, so there is no doubt that the pace will be solid, which will help Young Ida.
